For six long months I cried out to God for answers. Were my sins forgiven? What was missing in my life? Was I not following the Amish rules well enough?
Each morning I rose before the sun, harnessed the horses, and walked the rows of corn. The work was honest, but the silence inside me was loud. I had been baptized. I had submitted. I had done what the Ordnung asked of me. And still — no peace.
Then one evening, kneeling on the floor of the milkhouse with the lantern flickering, the answer came. Not as thunder, but as a still small voice that said, "Child, it is finished." I have never been the same.
